Role Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and improving new and existing fermentation processes and technologies. This will include setting up bench-to-pilot fermentation studies, processing and analyzing data, and working closely with Operations team in scale-up activities. As a fungal fermentation scientist, you are expected to leverage your fungal physiology knowledge to collaborate with early-stage research team to improve fermentation processes, including media development, fungal growth, and protein accumulation. Strong data analysis and communication skills along with good knowledge of analytical techniques are important for this role.

Essential Duties
  • Design and Direct experiments to evaluate fermentation conditions, medium formulations, and feeding strategies to improve product titer, rate and productivity in small scale and pilot scale bioreactors
  • Develop and optimize fungal fermentation media for flask culture, and for bench-top fermenters
  • Establish and optimize scalable fermentation cultures including inoculum ratio and feeding strategies
  • Lead the scale-up fermentation process and manage tech transfer activities from R&D pilot lab and to production and/or external CROs/CMOs.
  • Work closely with the early-stage development team to support the development of a high throughput screening practice for strain selection and media development
  • Manage and contribute to the development and improvement of laboratory infrastructure and protocols.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs and support QA, QC, and regulatory requirements
Knowledge & Skills
  • PhD degree in Microbiology, Bioprocess/Chemical Engineering or relevant field, 3+ years relevant experience in biomass and/or precision fermentation
  • Experience with a variety of lab-scale or plant-scale fermentation bioreactors and configurations, including batch, fed-batch, and continuous systems
  • Strong technical knowledge in microbial/fungal metabolism and fermentation development
  • Design of Experiments using statistical analysis tools (such as MiniTab) would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of experience with different types of bioreactors (STBR, airlift, solid state) and media formulation development
  • Experience with diverse microorganisms preferred (Filamentous fungi, bacteria, and yeast)
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent troubleshooting and investigational skills
  • Able to work in a team and adapt to a dynamic work environment including changing priorities and quick turnaround projects
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to present ideas in an understandable, non-technical manner to internal and external constituencies
  • Excellent record-keeping skills
  • Experience with diverse microorganisms preferred (Filamentous fungi, bacteria, and yeast)

Supervisory Responsibilities:  

  • Manages a small group of two/three associates within the R&D, late-stage development team
